If you have been thinking about improving your smile but are not sure where to start, you are not alone. Many people on the Sunshine Coast come to us with a mix of concerns — teeth that have shifted over time, discolouration from years of coffee and red wine, chips or cracks from everyday life, or simply a smile they have never felt fully confident about.
A smile makeover is not about chasing perfection. It is about understanding what you want, what is clinically appropriate, and working through a personalised plan that fits your life. At Maxicare Dental in Warana, Dr Richardi and I have been doing exactly that for many years — one patient, one smile at a time.
This article walks you through what a smile makeover actually involves, which treatments are commonly included, how the process works at our clinic, and what to look for when choosing a cosmetic dentist on the Sunshine Coast.
What Is a Smile Makeover?
A smile makeover is not a single procedure. It is a customised treatment plan that combines two or more dental treatments to address aesthetic and, where needed, functional concerns with your smile.
Depending on your situation, a smile makeover might involve:
Teeth whitening to overcome discolouration
Porcelain or composite veneers to reshape and resurface teeth
Dental crowns to restore damaged or heavily worn teeth
Clear aligners (Invisalign or Spark) to address spacing or poor alignment
Gum contouring to improve the proportions of your smile
Dental bonding to repair chips or close small gaps
A combination of several of the above
The key word is personalised. A plan that works for one person will not necessarily work for another, because no two mouths — and no two smiles — are the same.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Smile Makeover?
Most adults who are unhappy with one or more aspects of their smile are worth having a conversation with. Common concerns that bring patients to us include:
Discolouration — Teeth that have yellowed or stained over time, whether from food and drinks, tobacco, certain medications or aging. In many cases, professional whitening alone makes a significant difference.
Chips or cracks — Minor chips can often be addressed with composite bonding in a single visit. More significant damage may require veneers or crowns.
Uneven or worn teeth — Years of grinding (bruxism) can flatten and shorten teeth.
Veneers or crowns can restore length and shape.
Spacing or poor alignment — Gaps, crowding, or teeth that have shifted over the years can be addressed with clear aligners, sometimes in combination with cosmetic treatments.
Gummy smile — Some patients feel that too much gum is visible when they smile. Gum contouring can improve proportions without touching the teeth themselves.
Multiple concerns — When there are several things you would like to address, a coordinated plan is usually more efficient and produces better overall results than treating each issue in isolation.
The one requirement before any cosmetic work is a stable oral health foundation — healthy gums, no active decay, and no underlying issues that need to be resolved first. We always address these before beginning any aesthetic treatment.

The Smile Makeover Process at Maxicare Dental
Step 1: Consultation and Assessment
Every smile makeover at Maxicare Dental begins with a thorough consultation. There is no rushing in this step. We want to understand what you are hoping to achieve, what has been bothering you about your smile, and what your daily life and habits look like — all of which influence which treatments are appropriate.
We conduct a full clinical examination including X-rays where needed, an assessment of your gum health, bite, and jaw function, and a review of any existing dental work.
We also take the time to explain what is and is not clinically suitable for your situation — because not every treatment is right for every patient, and honest advice is always more useful than a sales conversation.
Step 2: Digital Smile Design
At Maxicare Dental, we use Digital Smile Design (DSD) technology — a digital planning process that allows us to design your new smile in 3D before any treatment begins.
This means you can see a preview of your proposed results, give us feedback, and make adjustments before starting the treatment. It also helps us plan with greater precision, so that the final result matches the plan closely.
For patients considering veneers or a significant smile transformation, this step is particularly valuable. It removes the guesswork and gives you genuine informed consent — which is central to how we practise.
Step 3: Treatment Planning
Once we have completed the assessment and you have seen the DSD preview, we put together a written treatment plan that outlines:
Which treatments are recommended and why
The sequence in which they will be carried out
Estimated timeframes
Associated costs
Any alternatives worth considering
We will walk you through this plan and answer every question before you commit to anything. There is no pressure to proceed, and we are happy for you to take the plan away and think about it.
Step 4: Treatment
Depending on which treatments are included, your smile makeover may be completed over one to several appointments. Some treatments — like teeth whitening or composite bonding — can be done in a single visit. Others, like porcelain veneers or crowns, require multiple appointments and involve a dental laboratory.
Throughout the process, you are kept informed at every step. If anything changes or you have questions between appointments, we are available.
Step 5: Review and Maintenance
Once your smile makeover is complete, we schedule a follow-up review to assess the results and make any minor adjustments if needed. We will also discuss how to maintain your results long-term — including appropriate at-home care and any protective measures (such as a night guard if grinding is a concern).

Common Treatments Included in a Smile Makeover
Professional in-chair whitening is one of the most common starting points in a smile makeover. It is safe, fast, and can significantly improve the overall brightness of your smile. Take-home whitening kits are also available for more gradual results or ongoing maintenance.
Note: Whitening only works on natural tooth enamel. Existing restorations — veneers, crowns, fillings — will not change colour, which is why whitening is typically done before other cosmetic work.
Veneers are thin ceramic shells bonded to the front surface of your teeth. They are particularly effective for addressing discolouration that does not respond to whitening, worn or chipped edges, minor misalignment, or teeth that are uneven in shape or size.
At Maxicare Dental, porcelain veneers are custom-made to match the shape, size, and shade that works best for your face and preferences. The process typically involves two appointments — preparation and fitting — with a laboratory fabrication period in between.
Composite veneers use tooth-coloured resin material applied and shaped directly onto the tooth surface. They are generally less expensive than porcelain and can often be completed in a single visit. The trade-off is durability — composite veneers typically need maintenance or replacement sooner than porcelain.
Crowns cover the entire visible portion of a tooth and are used when a tooth is too damaged, grossly decayed, or too worn for a veneer to be appropriate. Modern porcelain crowns are natural-looking and highly durable. They are often part of a smile makeover when teeth have been significantly compromised or for extensive changes to the smile.
For patients whose primary concern is alignment, crowding or spacing, clear aligners are often the most appropriate first step — or they may run concurrently with other treatments depending on the plan.
Maxicare Dental offers both Invisalign and Spark Clear Aligners, making us one of the few clinics on the Sunshine Coast with access to both systems. This means we can recommend the option that best suits your specific case rather than being limited to one product
What Makes a Good Cosmetic Dentist?
Choosing a dentist for a smile makeover is a significant decision. Here are a few things worth considering when making your choice on the Sunshine Coast.
Clinical experience — Cosmetic dentistry requires a high level of skill and an eye for aesthetics. Ask about the dentist's training, how long they have been performing smile makeovers, and whether they can show you examples of their work (keeping patient privacy in mind).
Honest assessment — A good cosmetic dentist will tell you what is and is not appropriate for your situation — including when a simpler or less expensive option will achieve a similar result.
Transparent communication — Every recommended treatment should be explained clearly, including the expected outcomes, the risks, and the alternatives. You should never feel pressured to proceed.
Compliance with AHPRA guidelines — Dentists in Australia are regulated by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), which sets standards for how dental services are advertised and communicated. Be cautious of clinics that make unqualified claims about results or use before-and-after imagery in ways that may mislead.
Long-term relationship — A smile makeover is the beginning of an ongoing relationship with your dentist, not a one-off transaction. Look for a clinic where you feel genuinely heard and where continuity of care is valued.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a smile makeover take? It depends entirely on which treatments are included. A simple combination of inchair whitening and bonding composite might be completed in two visits. A more comprehensive plan involving veneers, crowns, or clear aligners may take several months.
Is a smile makeover painful? Most cosmetic dental procedures involve local anaesthetic when needed. Post-procedure sensitivity varies by treatment but is typically minimal and short-lived. We discuss what to expect for each treatment before we begin.
How long do the results last? This depends on the treatments involved and how well they are maintained. Porcelain veneers and crowns can last 10–20 years with appropriate care. Composite work typically requires maintenance and replacement sooner. We will give you realistic expectations for each component of your plan.
Does private health insurance cover smile makeovers? Some cosmetic treatments attract partial health fund rebates depending on your level of cover. We recommend checking with your fund directly, as cover varies significantly between providers and plans.
Can I see what my new smile will look like before I commit? Yes — we use Digital Smile Design at Maxicare Dental, which allows us to preview your proposed results digitally before any treatment begins. This is an important part of our consultation process.
